Yep, there is a door there now.

Recording booth door is finished
mostly. I need to put up the door stop and put some gasket stuff around it. The next sound source to fix is
in the corner next to the mixer power supply. Fan noise is sneaking through the seem. I packed some foam
in the gap, but that did not fix the problem.
Control room door is the next project.

The studio is comeing along
I got the doors for the sound booth and the big floor. Now need to install them ….
We did a recording last night, it worked out o.k.
The studio booking button is working just fine.

Changes to the new studio are needed.
First off, the recording booth is now smaller (not enough room for all 5 panels) so its 4`x4`. This is ‘o.k.’ as long as we are careful about what we put in there. Problem is the door will now have to swing out. I am thinking about a solid core slab door. Also the doorway between the equipment room the the ‘big’ floor need a slab door.
Last thing, I think I will put a small gear rack out in the shop and put the power supply for the mixer in it and the power amp for the speakers. Wish I could put the computer out there also. These fans are noisy and hard for filter out.

Studio moved.
With some reservations at this point. The gear is in the building, still have to connect all the wire (there is a lot of it). May get a dry run this weekend.

Paying for a war.
In WWII we did rationing http://www.ameshistoricalsociety.org/exhibits/events/rationing.htm now, we just borrow the money from China. I wonder which one makes more sense.

Looks like I am getting my old studio back.
There will be some down time, about 2 weeks I guess. I will need to put in a new floor and build a patch panel and a few things like that, but I am expecting to be in a much better place in a few weeks.

Here’s an idea for long term servival.
Don’t become an out of control raging drug user until after age 27.
Here’s the data:
Amy Winehouse, Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain. All talented musicians dead at 27. The thing they all feared was to be ignored or silenced.

Subwoofer and odd pan law
I noticed a few things about my mixes, when played from CD elsewhere. The base seems to be very present and there are some odd left to right side compression.
The base, it turns out is a bug in my surround sound mixing system. The subwoofer is derived from a combination of the left and right channel, left+right. If the phase is +left and +right, the base cancels out in the subwoofer. To overcome a light base mix, I pump up the base to get a sound I like.
To fix the ‘too loud base’ I have been using the phase button on the DDA mixer to invert one of the stereo channels. The base is then very loud or at least present, and I can adjust it as needed, the reset the phase. Another way to fix it and to have the base track, and 2 copies of the base trace. Then invert one copy and pan copy a to the left and copy b to the right a bit. Then lock the channel gains together and this seems to allow mixing without getting too much base in the final product…. btw you need to mute the copies when its time to bounce down the mix.
The other thing I have found is that ITunes just sucks for making masters of CD’s. I had never given it any though, just assumed it was good, because everyone is using it. Bad move. When compared to Waves, ITunes is just junk.
There 2 problems with ITunes. 1 the final sound is muted a bit, like a blanket is on the speakers, and 2 the stereo image is compressed, like someone sawed off the outside of the sound.
Anyway, its WaveLab from here on out.
